Normal Foal Behavior

Foals play, just like children. It is their way of finding out who they are. I could watch foals all day play in and out around their mothers. It’s fun, but it also teaches a lot about behavior. If you get a chance, do this. Do this a lot and you will learn much.

Foal A – 1 of 7 – the young foal is off camera on the left. The oldest foal is independent of his mother who never comes around the group. The middle age foal stays close to her mother.
Foal A – 2 of 7 – the young foal approaches for another playful attack of the older foal who is eating or itching his side – or is he warning the young foal to stay away?
Foal A – 3 of 7 – The young foal continues to bother the older foal but his Mom approaches from the left.
Foal A – 4 of 7 – The young foal continues to bother the older foal but his Mom approaches from the left.
Foal A – 5 of 7 – The young foal disappears while peace remains over everyone else. of 5 – The young foal continues to bother the older foal but his Mom approaches from the left.
Foal A – 6 of 7 – The mare divides the two ending the possibility of tussle she feels her young foal is not ready for. This was such a subtle “mothering manouver” yet it was clear and effective.
Foal A – 7 of 7 – The young foal disappears while peace remains over everyone else.
Foal A – 1 of 3 – The youngest foal approaches the oldest foal (who couldn’t be bothered and has abundant patience).
Foal A – 2 of 3 – The youngest foal approaches the oldest foal as the oldest foal leans away not interested in playing.
Foal A – 3 of 3 – The youngest foal attacks the oldest foal and a few seconds later he was gone as the older foal just turned away saying, “No!”
This foal finds security in his mother’s tail – a common behavior in an insecure foal. He was not bothered by flies, but was the youngest of the 3 foals here.

Foal behavior
Flehmen lip curl is normal in a foal being scratched. If the foal had chewing motions, this would be called champing and would be a sign of submission.
