When the lower incisors extend past the occlusal surface of the upper incisors. It does not affect the cheek teeth, which differentiates a sow mouth from an underbite.

20 year old pony mare with a BCS of 7 fed grass, grass and alfalfa hay and 1 handful of organic oats. Has easily maintained her weight with a sow mouth. Harvests grass easily but can’t get a close cut. Other horses realize she can’t bite them and despite her best efforts, the others start to pick on her as she can’t defende herself.
